Greg at Off Axis Paint agreed to let Style Driven document his process. The approach was editorial: focused on the precision, the detail, and the artistry behind custom NASCAR helmet painting.

How we got there

Greg started as a friend of one of our photographers, and now he's a friend of the whole studio. He let us into his shop to show how a NASCAR helmet gets made.

01On paper
It starts with a marker
Every helmet starts as a printed layout and a marker, so that's where the story starts.
02Tape and paint
Tape, airbrush, then the brush
Fine-line tape marks every edge before the airbrush comes out, then the detail goes in by hand. We stayed close enough to see the tape and far enough to stay out of his way.
03The shop
The shop as he keeps it
We shot it as it is: the clutter, the shelf of painted helmets, the bench. That's where the work happens, so that's where the story is.
